PEONY PAVILION IN WATERCOLOURS WORKSHOP 10-11 May 2024

Part 2

Fuchsia Lane is pleased to collaborate with Penang artist, Chong, for our Peony Pavilion collection. His watercolour paintings of the story have been transformed into embroideries on some of our designs. We have also reworked with his drawings to create our limited edition Peony Pavilion tees, crafted in Taipei using the softest cotton and bio-degradable water based inks. Kornit’s patented NeoPigment™ is environment friendly and allows printing that captures the finest details and thus essence of Chong’s watercolour paintings.

Chong Yee Wang, otherwise known as Chong, is an artist from Penang, another cradle of Peranakan culture, who goes by the social media Instagram handle “@73arts_”, and is a trained architect. He is both passionate about painting and Chinese Opera since a tender age. So chemistry came naturally between Fuchsia Lane and Chong. To read more about our inspiration, please click here

In conjunction with the launch of the limited edition tees, Fuchsia Lane was also thrilled to invite Chong for a 2 day special creative dialogue and workshop during May 2024, where he demonstrated his flair and love for watercolour painting as well as Opera Art. It was a successful multi-city and multi-creative exchange between Fuchsia Lane and Chong, where participants came from as far as Hong Kong to purchase our limited edition collection and also brought back his hand-painted fans as keepsakes.

Known for his unique style watercolour paintings on wood panels which often feature Koi, heritage buildings and portraits of Opera characters, Chong’s artwork has been exhibited in various galleries in Penang. He has also conducted numerous workshops for international schools, as well as pop up markets and fairs. His clientele stretches beyond the shores of the local art collector scene, having gained many international fans who can see the passion he has through his paintings.

Chong can usually be found on weekends at Hin Bus Depot Creative Fair, reported by 'Penang Monthly' as a successful creative bazaar in Penang, showcasing upcoming talents in the arts. So if you like his collaboration works with us, please visit him during weekends at Hin Bus Depot when you are next in Penang.

Discover his passion and what made him turn from Architect to Artist in our "Chit Chat with Creatives" series. Chong wears a Fuchsia Lane mandarin collar shirt with batik details. Batik is crafted by a family workshop in Penang. To shop our collection, please click here
